Thread: Arban's for amateurs?

  1. Arban's for amateurs?

I am a 77 year old decent amateur player with a Yamaha 621s baritone. I play bass clef n 4 community bands but practice only about 15-20 minutes a day. I have many books but decided recently to look at Arban's, so I got Alessi and Bowman's book through the library. Since I'm not willing to spend $55 for their book, I've hunted around and found several options--Randall's book; Arban's Famous Method for Trombone; and Arban's Method for trombone and baritone (Gordon and Goldman, 1936). I'd appreciate any suggestions as to what is the closest to Alessi and Bowman but in the $20-30 range. Are there others I should consider? Thanks.

Arban's Famous Method for Trombone is a good book, I have it. I also have the Bowman/Alessi commented Arban's which is spiral bound and a great book but over $50. The first one I mentioned is similar to the standard Arban's book, get that one if you don't want to cough up a little over $50.

Which "first book listed above" are you referring to? My Arban's Famous Method for Trombone is 261 pages.

  7. As the extreme budget option, if you can read treble clef and don't mind reading off a screen or printing it yourself, the original Arban's is in the public domain and available on the IMSLP/Petrucci music library.

John, I followed the link to the one linked in 58mark's post. Amazon says it is 80 pages and weighs 8.8 ounces. That's as much as I know!

Oh, okay. You're right about that book, the Arban-Prescott book is 80 pages. I think several were responding all at once and I thought you were referring to my post. Sorry.

The Prescott version is very good, it's all the essentials, and sounds perfect for what he is asking for
