Thread: Silver Finish Wearing Off

  1. Silver Finish Wearing Off

So I have a quick question. My Wessex euph is in need of a polishing. However, the places where my hands rest (3rd valve slide and the hand-bar behind the valves) have started to wear off. Which I know is common. Does silver polish fix this? Would leather hand guards be a good idea?

    Hi daviste,

Unfortunately polishing a silver plated horn where some of the finish has worn off does not bring back the shine. For this reason, I use some leather hand guards to protect the finish in places... right hand handle and left hand grip area near the 4th valve. See images below:

I would go ahead and polish as normal. SOMETIMES tarnish shows up in a yellow tint that could like like the brass is showing through. It won't hurt to polish it and see.

But handguards are a good idea in general.

  4. Darn. I had a feeling it wasn't that "magical."
Do you guys have a recommended set of leather guards or know of a good place/website to buy them from?

I recommend LSCO, Leather Specialties Co. Their guards are 3-piece construction with an outer leather type material, below that is a layer of plastic to prevent moisture from your hands soaking through, than a velour type fabric that comes in contact with the horn. Depending on the model of your horn, they have some ready-made guards, or, they can make customer guards at a little higher price. Mine had to be custom made and it took a little while.
