Increasing throat size on Bach 4G plus gold plating options

    Hey all,

I am 2 weeks into giving a Bach 4G a run to see whether I like it more then my SM4U. At this stage, I actually like the Bach more and I am considering changing, however I sometimes wish that I could have the Bach 4G but with a slightly wider throat. I am probably used to the very open throat of the Ultra and I sometimes wish the Bach's throat was just a tad more open (not as much as the Ultra, but probably somewhere in-between the stdandrd Bach 4G throat and the SM4U throat. I am wanting to know whether it is possible to get modifications like this done by any local brass repairer/technician, or do I need to go to a specialist company (like Mouthpiece Express). Also is this something people would recommend doing or should I just leave the throat alone?

Second of all, is there any considerable difference (tone wise) from a mouthpiece that is completely gold plated to a mouthpiece that is just gold rim and cup plated? Is the only main difference aesthetics?

    Thanks

    FYI

The megatone line has a wider throat than the standard 4g. Might be able to get what you want right off the shelf

Given what this would likely end up costing you, you might well be better off by getting just what you want from Doug Elliott.

The scenario you're describing could end up in a sequence of trial and errors where you easily spend $200-$300 and still end up with something you're not happy with.

From the specs, it is only a difference of a thousandth of an inch. So probably not going to be as overly noticeable.

  5. Take the mouthpiece to your tech and ask for it to be bored out. It's a pretty simple procedure, lots of bass trombonists do it because bigger=better for them. If you're worried about ruining your piece buy a crappy 4G or similarly sized mouthpiece and try it with that first.

I'd just like to throw in Justin Gorodetzky, he worked on making my custom Schilke, and I think he did fantastic work. It's around $90 for his services.
