I bought one of these because of the great price. I got it from the link John the Theologian provided to eBay and quinntheeskimo for 19.95 plus $6 for shipping. The mouthpiece is fine, except I would have to say it is a blemish quality mouthpiece. No nicks or dents, but some of the finish is marred in a couple places. Plays fine, but not first quality.

John, did you mention that to Quinn?

If all of them are blemished, he should say so on his ebay listing. If only yours is blemished, he should replace it since he didn't advertise them as blemished.

He's a regular seller of horns and mps and generally has a very good reputation. Hopefully he isn't slipping here.

  3. Are the mouthpieces small or large shank?

    Large shank from both sellers.

  5. I have been using this mouthpiece regularly since I got it and even played our last concert on it (community band I play in). I really like it quite a bit. I've played on a schilke 51d ever since my euph teacher in college put me on it 20-something years ago. The rim of this 5g feels almost identical and is very comfortable.

I've always found that my Mack euph has a broader tone than I like and lacked some focus, so this 5g seems to be a good match for that horn. I'll continue to use the 51d in the hirsbrunner, though....they just work together so well for me.

Mine did not come blemished. I highly recommend this mpc for your collection!

John the T: I will notify him. It looks like someone burned the finish in a few places. It is still smooth and serviceable, just doesn't look good.

Duh!! The mouthpiece had TARNISH on it. In all of my 50 plus years of playing, mostly on silver plated euphoniums, you would think I would know that. But, I must say, I have never bought a mouthpiece that started out with tarnish on it, so I thought these marks were blemishes. Live and learn. I go away now....

Easy mistake to make. Since these mps were New/Old Stock, they likely were sitting on a shelf for a while- hence the tarnish.

I would try to rub some toothpaste on it and see if it'll come off. You might have to put some elbow in it, but I think you can get it off with toothpaste.

I have several silver polishing cloths with polish built into the cloths. They did the trick already. Mouthpiece looks fine now, I, however, look like a fool. My natural state, says my wife (with a smile and love).

By the way, on another subject sort of altogether, silver cloths with polish built in are the "bomb" for shining silver plated horns. I used to use polish in a container and cloths, no more. The cloths with the stuff in them work great. Just keep them sealed up real good when not in use to preserve the polish. And a good hand washing when you are done.
