My daughter is a sophomore in HS, she NEEDS to move up from her beginner instrument. She plays a besson sovereign at school ... we would LOVE to find her a used one. Any help with leads to purchasing one would be helpful. We live in Illinois.

Welcome to the forum!
Do you specifically want a Besson Sovereign? The used prices are roughly from $2500 to $4000 (or more, if it is very new). At the lower range they are usually a little rough, although sweet deals do show up now and then. There are 2 basic models - the 967 and 968. The 967 has a 12" bell and the 968 an 11" bell. The 967 has a very "curvy" leadpipe, adn the 968 looks a teeny bit more angular.
Be sure to watch the For Sale section of this forum. I will put any used Sovereigns there if there are worth anyone's consideration.
There are other options if she is not totally stuck on Sovereign. The Wessex Dolce is around $1200 new and is a very nice horn. It's a 4-valve compensating horn like the one she is used to. It has a very nice sound, but there are very few horns that have a big a sound as a Sovereign in the hands of a strong player.Dave Werden (ASCAP)

I'll move this thread there tomorrow - that section is for both for-sale and also wanted-to-buy.Dave Werden (ASCAP)

I love the Besson sound. If you are patient, you should eventually find a good used one listed on eBay. (Dave Werden often posts links to the best ones on this site.) If you look at other postings on this forum, you will see that there are many who like the Chinese made Mack and Wessex euphoniums. I've played one owned by a colleague and was impressed. They seem to be an exceptional good value but, to my ears, don't have the Besson sound. Still, they might be a good choice for a high school student.

Hi! I have been browsing the forum and saw a previous post of yours with a price for your Prestige.... We can not invest that much right now, although we'd love to be able to! I also saw the post of you playing - it sounded GREAT! Can you tell me what differences exist between the soverign and prestige?

For starters... These days the Prestige is made of heavier metal and usually have a trigger. The old Sovereigns were probably made of heavier metal than today's Sovereigns.
But others on the forum are more in touch with these things and may correct or append what I've said.Dave Werden (ASCAP)

I have a 3 +1 Besson I am looking to sell. I bought it on the Tuba Exchange four years ago. The problem is, I can't tell you much about it. It's VERY old, with no serial number in site. But sounds AMAZING. I played 2 years on it in a prestigious college band, and it's puzzled all of my teachers. I'm going to start a new thread with pictures to see if anyone can help out.

I have a similar horn, 1971 vintage, only in lacquer, which I intend to never sell. It has some intonation issues (sharp 6th partial), and mouthpiece selection is a little limited due to medium shank, but other than that, it is an awesome horn, and many (myself included) would prefer one of these over one of the newer "budget" horns.

But beyond that, it is difficult to find a good old Besson for sale, unless you want to restore one that is beat up. Certainly there aren't enough of them to satisfy the need.Dave Werden (ASCAP)
