Getting used to Denis Wick BSM4X

Coming from a Schilke and Yamaha 51D, the Denis Wick BSM4X feels much bigger. I am having trouble getting used to the bigger cup diameter, and my tone is very airy. If anyone has any suggestions I would gladly appreciate it. Thanks

It's not an overnight process when you're moving into a larger cup diameter. It will take a little while before you become used to it. Your tone is more open because the Schilke 51D's isn't as open as the Denis Wick.

How long have you had the new Wick? As Tex says, it will take a while to adjust. The iconic 51D is a very focused, smaller mouthpiece. It gives a dark sound while a Wick SM4X as you can see is more open. It takes a lot more air to fully use the Wick but it's worth it. Over the years I transitioned from a 51D to a SM4 to an SM4X and love the latest model. Notice how easy it is to slur cleanly on the X vs the 51D especially large intervals and in the upper range.
