Thread: Looking for solo

    Looking for solo

Hello, I'm asking if anyone on here could help me find a challenging euph and piano solo for HS. For reference, last year I played Six Sonatas by Galliard (trombone version) Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum!

Are you constrained by a high school contest list? It would be helpful to know that.

There are many theme & variation solos in the traditional mold, of course. But here are a couple other ideas.

Morceau Symphonique is one of my favorites:

    Sheet music is here:

And my own Six Variations on a Theme from Judas Maccabeus (orig. by Handel/Beethoven). These variations are not in the traditional mode, and will show off a more refined side of your playing:

Sheet music, download or printed, available here:

Jerry Owen's Variations, and original euphonium solo written for Rich Matteson. It is somewhat jazz-like in flavor, but requires no unusual techniques or ad-libbing. This one could show off a more "dynamic" side of your playing:

Dave's own arrangement of the first two movements of Holst's Second Suite in F is fantastic, played it for a university audition which I passed.
1st movement (2nd movement of the original piece): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRlyUVXTg-U
2nd movement (1st movement of the original piece): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr7up46Ikfk
And the Sheet Music, which comes with a very nice little book for the piano part, and the euph part has both a TC part and a BC part on either side of an approx. 17"x11" sheet.

(on a sidenote, wow, Cimarron really improved their site recently!)

Thanks for the comments about the Holst!

The link above to Cimarron will let you order the printed music OR download it is a PDF for instant delivery. That's partly why Cimarron wanted to change the site format (plus the fact that the old site was not very pretty and was struggling a bit with the ever-increasing number of titles).

Sheet Music Plus also carries the music in print or download format:

Good suggestions so far. I'd like to recommend "Rhapsody for Euphonium" (James Curnow). Mr Curnow wrote this and dedicated it to his teacher, Leonard Falcone. It's in Am Dorian mode, so almost sounds to be in C major. It's available for piano accompaniment or wind band. It starts off with an unaccompanied cadenza before the piano starts playing. Later on it gets a bit more technical, but not too difficult. I think it's a grade 4. It's supposed to end on a high 'B' natural, but there is an alternate note you can play.

Here's one of the best performances I could find by Toru Miura with Tokyo Kosei but with the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. Mr. Mirua plays it perfectly.

I'm restrained by the Euphonium/Baritone Horn Solo Class 1 List (Texas). Morceau Symphonique and Rhapsody is on there, but as far as I know, Variations (Owen) and Dave's Six Variations & Second Suite aren't. Different clefs aren't an issue. My playing range (in context) is a B flat 1 to a D flat 5.

I'm working on Morceau Symphonique myself right now for a Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music Grade 8 test. It's a great piece, you really couldn't go wrong choosing it. Unless of course it's not to your liking.

The Morceau sounds great in my opinion, but the one on the list isn't the op 88 that the link leads to.

The Texas UIL list shows only one edition for euphonium, but 4 for trombone. Are you allowed to use a trombone edition of the same piece?

The euphonium version is published by Associated Music Publishers, Inc. but I can't find much about them.

One of the approved trombone versions is published by Leduc, and that is easier to find:
