    Metalwerx Concert - 2/15/2015

Last Sunday (2/15/2015) our tuba/euph quartet, Metalwerx, put on a concert at the University of Vermont. I'll post more later, once I get the video processed, but here's a first cut, our closer: Rolling Thunder (arranged by the inimitable Dave Werden).

I'll post more links in this thread when I have them.

Here's a second recording from our concert: a medley of music from the Hayao Miyazaki animated movie, "Princess Mononoke." It is a lovely arrangement from a book of duets, trios and this quartet that apparently originates from a source in Japan. Almost all of the text in the book is in Japanese; fortunately Yutaka Kono (playing F tuba on the performance) is from Japan and was able to translate it for us. The medley consists of the Princess Mononoke main theme, Folktales of A****aka, A****aka and San, and then the main theme returns at the end.

It is a lovely piece that I will never tire of playing. I hope you enjoy it.

If you are interested in acquiring the book, you can find it here: http://www.amazon.com/Euphonium-Tuba.../dp/4636902033

One more recording for today: the "Pop Suite" by Arthur Frackenpohl, who was one of my professors when I was doing my undergrad work at the Crane School of Music (SUNY Potsdam) in the late '70s. I also recorded his Sonata for Euphonium with him and Unaccompanied Sonata for Bass Trombone (or Euphonium) for him when he sent them off to his publisher. The Pop Suite is one of the very first original works written specifically for tuba/euphonium quartet that I am aware of, and was later adapted for the brass quintet, too.

      Enjoy!

Good group you've got there! Thanks for playing my arrangement!

When the Atlantic Tuba Quartet wanted to our first album in 1977, we chose the Pop Suite as one of the titles - it is very nicely written and fun to play.

What a great sounding group - I went to school with Yutaka Kono at Bowling Green State University, he's brilliant and a wonderful, kind person.

Dave: Thanks for listening! We also did your arrangement of the march from the Holst Second Suite in F. I haven't gotten around to processing that section of the video yet,, but I will get it posted eventually.

Jake: I'll let Yutaka know you heard us.

The world premier of "Irrational Happiness," by Lydia Lowery Busler, was the centerpiece of our concert last Sunday and is a wonderful new addition to the tuba/euphonium quartet repertoire. We had a lot fun putting this one together and performing it.

Our "relax and reset" piece after "Irrational Happiness" was "They Didn't Believe Me," composed by Jerome Kern for the 1912 musical "The Girl From Utah" (yeah, we'd never heard of it before, either) and arranged for tuba/euph quartet by Bill Holcombe.

One more for today: "Grand Slam," by Lennie Niehaus. As far as we can tell this is an original work for tuba/euph quartet, as we didn't find any other references to the piece for any other ensemble. Yeah, maybe we don't swing like Basie, but we still had a lot of fun with this one.
