Thread: Popular Songs that Yodel

    Popular Songs that Yodel

This is a little offbeat for the forum, but here goes...

I'd like as many of you as possible to speak up and tell me what songs come to mind that have actual yodeling or even simulated yodeling in them. By "simulated" I mean in the manner of Julie Andrews in Sound of Music when she sings the Lonely Goatherd song - it's not real yodeling, but sounds close.

If you would, please limit the input to songs in the "popular" realm, including country/western, musicals, etc. I know there are TONS of fun yodeling examples on YouTube and elsewhere from Swiss/German sources and such, but I'm thinking more of songs that might have been heard by average USA listeners.

This is a very loose kind of poll. Thanks in advance for the input!

My stepfather NEVER ventured south or west of Brooklyn, Queens, or Manhattan. Why he loved Eddy Arnold is beyond my comprehension. He played this constantly.
Eddy Arnold was a major country star before country was cool and did a LOT of yodeling.

Almost a yodel, or she hints at it.

Interesting stuff so far, but I'd like more!!!! Keep 'em coming.

Rick, thanks for suggesting Crazy. It's not for the same reason as this post, but I'm going to be playing that in March as part of a recital at the U of IA. Nice song! Patsy comes closer to a yodel (fully there, I think, but not elaborate) in this song:

I also like the Eddy Arnold idea, although it too is not what I'm secretly hoping to find. (When I find it I'll share the secret) I've always found Eddy's voice relaxing; I think he had a tune in the top 40 when I young, which is the first I remember hearing him.

  6. OK I'll have a go at it. As a fan of hard rock there was a Dutch band named Focus in the early 70s that did a song called Hocus Pocus which had something akin to yodeling intermixed with great guitar jam and riffs. Also Jewel does a song called The Yodel Song with some high speed yodeling in the mid 2000s. Oh and the Ricola guy.....

How about "The Creator Has a Master Plan," sung (and yodeled) by Leon Thomas on Pharoah Sanders's Karma album (and before anyone pounces on this, yes, the possessive form of Sanders is Sanders's, pronounced sand-ers-ez; that's because Sanders is a singular noun that ends in an s).

Okay, it wasn't a pop hit, but it may have been the closest thing to a pop hit that avant-garde jazz produced in the late 1960s early 1970s.

There was one in the movie "Mars Attacks" by Slim Whitman:

[Rodgeman: the audio is not clear on that one, so I am adding this link with Slim's original. I did not know this song in its yodel form. Thanks!]

Somewhere in my house, I have the Slim Whitman Christmas Album CD. Yodeling Christmas carols. It's a great way to clear the house of guests when they've stayed too long during the holidays.
