    Matteson/Philips Tubajazz Consort on YouTube

Some gracious person uploaded one of the Rich Matteson/Harvey Phillips Tubajazz concerts to YouTube. It's from one of the US Army Tuba-Euphonium conferences in the mid '80s, perhaps. Rich and John Allred play some scorching solos in this concert. I think this group demonstrated that the euphonium and tuba have a place in jazz and does not need to be relegated to novelty or New Orleans jazz music. If you happen to know what model euphonium Rich is playing at this concert, please feel free to chime in. He's not playing a King 2280. However, Buddy Baker is playing a 2280, who's standing next to Rich in the second row.

This is a good demonstration of the fun stuff you can find on the Euphonium Videos page on my site. Here is that same video:

And you can hear more of Rich playing here:

Not for sure as I'm viewing with an iPhone, but I think Rich is playing a Yamaha 321. I'll have to watch the video on my PC later.

Yeah, that's initially what I thought too, Rick, a Yamaha 321, recognized by the curl of the main tube. Though, all I see is three valves being used by Rich in the video. What a great concert.

Can you guys see if there is a 4th valve in line on Rich's horn? I thought I was only seeing three.

For a lot of years I know Rich was a Yamaha clinician, and I think he used the 321. But at one of the Army conferences he was playing (i.e. experimenting) with a Willson at the exhibits. Not sure if he performed on it or now.

I'm pretty sure Matteson used a 321. I thought there was some prior discussion regarding the best euphonium for jazz and the 321 was mentioned.
