Thread: Favorite Euphonium CD/Album?

  1. What about Holst!! Holst made me fall in love with euph/baritone/tuba, and vice versa.

The euphonium figures prominently in Holst's 1st and 2nd Suites for Concert Band:

I love many, many euphonium CDs, but my personal favorites are Adam Frey's Majestic Journey, Steven Mead's Euphonium Magic and Audacious, as well as Demondrae Thurman's SoliloQuies. But there are plenty of other great ones. I have one from David Thronton, the name is slipping me right now, but I know it is spectacular too.

I really like Nick Ost's CD with Fodens and Russell Gray, Over the Edge. I had never heard any of the repertoire on it before - most original Belgian works - but all very entertaining and very well played. I think Stephen Mead sells the CD through his online store if you can't find it elsewhere.

  4. I'll throw in my two cents and suggest "Stories of Life" by Glenn Van Looy. The feature solo is "Once Upon a Time" which was commissioned by Glenn's parents for his birthday and was composed by Steven Verhelst. The playing is just virtuosic.

  5. I don't see Henry Charles Smith Plays Baritone (available on YouTube). He was actually playing a Conn Constellation 25i euphonium (consulted on the design). Loved taking lessons with Henry Charles Smith many years ago.

Agreed! He was the only euphonium player I wanted to study with after leaving college, and I had several lessons when we traveled back to visit the Twin Cities (before he moved to AZ, which was before he moved back to MN again). A truly fine musician and gentleman!

If you haven't already seen it, you might enjoy this interview with him:

I love "Return to Sorrento" by Joseph Alessi. Yeah, I know that it isn't a euphonium recording (but it should have been). Like everything Mr. Alessi plays, it is very musical. His slide technique is so smooth that you'd swear he was playing with valves.

  8. The first Howard Johnson / Gravity album has some nice euph solos by Dave Bargeron.

I have many, but the two I always love are Derick Kane's 'Lyric Variations' and 'The Derick Kane Euphonium Album'. Two very beautiful albums that demonstrate some of the best SA published euphonium solos. My iPad has probably gotten sick of playing both of them.
