Thread: Favorite Euphonium CD/Album?

  1. #11
For a nice break in your listening routine, try some jazz from Rich Matteson:

    Easy Street

Life's a Take (Digital Only) - Rich Matteson & Red Mitchell

Pardon Our Dust, We're Making Changes - Rich Matteson Sextet

He plays in a manner totally different from traditional euphonium style. Rich was instructor of jazz at North Texas and a founder of the Matteson-Phillips TubaJazz group. He's very innovative and plays jazz in a style I like very much. I also learned from him how to build high range. Great player!

One of my favorite euphonium recordings is a duo recording done a number of years ago by the Childs brothers, Nicholas and Robert, accompanied by various top British brass bands. Now, Robert is playing duos with his son David as well. I haven't heard those, but given the quality of both of their playing, I'm sure those recordings are great as well. The recording I'm familiar with is Child's Play. Here's a link to a British vendor.

Very approachable, too. I exchanged a couple of letters with him back in the early Eighties. He died far, far too young.

  6. My personal favorite is Elegie by Thomas Ruedi. Incredibly beautiful singing style, fabulous technique. Sounds like a violinist rather than a euphonium player.
