Everyone must be on vacation this week. I wish I were, but I've already burned my vacation.

I suspect that a big part of the summer slow-down is an indication of how many postings are from the academic community (students or faculty). Also, in my experience in industry, during the months of July and particularly August, Europe is essentially closed.

I'm afraid I've been at Marching band camp the past week, so I haven't been around to stir up trouble.

I have this image in my mind of marching band camp as involving sleeping bags on cots on wooden tent platforms under canvas tents, eating in the mess hall or cooking over fires with open pots. Then assembling on the parade ground for hours of marching practice, broken only by lunch in camp or mess hall at long wooden tables, pouring healthful drinks from pewter pitchers. What a wonderful way to spend a week in the summer (at least north of, say, Pennsylvania -- otherwise the temperature, humidity, and local insect life diminish the experience).

Alas, this image is very likely not entirely accurate.

  8. These days probably more like it was depicted in the movie American Pie! Wish I could go back sometimes!

We never had band camps in the early '60s. The emphasis in our HS music program was symphonic. We marched home game half-time shows because it was expected, but the focus was always on that first concert in November.
