Thread: Thomas Van Osten & his Conn

Pic - 1890's Double Bell Euphonium - Thos D. Van Osten

    Thanks Dave,

I restored the horn 20 years ago. My two sons played it in high school orchestra. My father played the horn in brass groups at church (he was the pastor) during the 60-80s.

I thought the group might be interested in a pic.

Wow!! That is a Jim Dandy double-belled euphonium!! Look at all of that engraving!! And the case looks in excellent shape. Is that the original case?

Now then, let me know when you get ready to sell it!!

I'll echo what everyone else has said. Thanks for sharing this info and photos of this beautiful horn Steve! A really cool piece of euphonium history, and that engraving is so cool.

So, between forums, ancestry.com and other google search results I've finally located this horns origin. Here are a couple of more pics I've taken today. One shows the engraving with Made By Conn Elkhart, IND Thos D. Van Osten. Another pic showing the engravers "Stenberg Eng". I also included a better pic (than the one in a case). Wow again! Steve, I need to know your exact physical address and the times when you are not at home and leave your front door unlocked and this euphonium in plain sight!! I jest, of course, but my goodness that is a fine instrument. How does it play? You say your father and your sons played it, do you?

I really like pretty horns! Nice engraving reminds me of fine coinage, but bigger.

Thanks Steve for the additional pictures. Beautiful engraving!

I found a link with more information about the Stenberg brothers who did a lot of the engraving for C.G. Conn.

Rick - that is interesting about the Stenberg brothers. And the site itself is interesting. Can you imagine working at a company for 60-70 years?
