Comparisons of Denis Wick SM Ultra series and Alliance DC series

I would quite like to buy one of these mouthpieces, after playing each of them properly and testing side by side. But just wondered what were peoples views on each series?

    Thanks

I've owned and been playing a 4AL for some time and I love it. It has a great sound which sets me apart from other players I know and I can get around on it pretty easy. Whichever you get, you'll like it so long as it's a wick (though it might take some time getting used to because they generally have a wider diameter). I like the feel of my MPC, but I want something a bit more weighty. It is for that reason that I'm purchasing an SM4U. I couldn't tell you if one was better than the other, that comes down to preference, if you get to try several at the same time, you'll find what you like.

I too have owned and played a 4AL Wick for quite some time. I purchased and tried a SM4U for a few weeks and ended going back to the 4AL. The primary reason was the feel of the rim against my face. The SM4U was very different.

The innermost edge of the rim felt very sharp againt my face. The 4AL was much smoother and much more comfortable against my face. I have returned back to the original 4AL and the SM4U is for sale.

I also use a Wick 4AL on my large bore tenor trombone and I use a Wick 0AL on my bass trombone. I like the Wick rim, but the SM4U is too different.

that would take some time getting used to. If it's just a matter of how it feels, I could live with it. I assume the Sharp inner edge is to make it sound more brilliant, but does it cut down on endurance?

What about going back to a classic SM4?

I own both an SM Ultra 3 and an Alliance DC 2 model. Originally I was playing on a wick SM2 and loved it but my tone seemed to lack core. I began playing around with others and it came down to the SMU 3 and the DC 2. I chose the DC 2 because of the increased core to my tone and (to me at least) the mouthpiece seemed to fight less than the SMU (if that makes any sense). I also felt that the DC had a more comfortable feel around the chops for me. I reccomend the DC model but everyone is different, it depends on what sound you like and what feels best to you.

Play a Wick 4AL on my Sovereign (came with the horn) and I really like it, so I picked up a SM3M to go with my New Standard after it arrived. Same comfortable fit with a slighly smaller size by feel (only slightly smaller, I might add). It plays great!
