How to Learn to Make Brass Instruments

    Hello everyone,

I am interested in learning to make brass instruments, but I do not know how to learn. Is there any places where a person could learn to make a brass instrument other than to teach yourself? Thank all of you for your time.

There are probably ways to learn on the job. Kanstul, for example, makes instruments in the USA, and there are some custom makers for trombones and trumpets. If you were to get a job there, you would probably pick up the trade quickly.

There are some formal programs. I think the one in Red Wing, MN has a pretty good reputation:

There are others, too. Do a search, or take a look here:

The emphasis is often on repair, but that's a good place to start. It would be invaluable to know what breaks and how it breaks before you start designing and building instruments!

Thank you for the advice. I will have to look more into those programs and also repair shops. Hopefully I can find a place that will work for me.
