The President's Own, U.S. Marine Band

My wife and I went to the Marine Band concert last night at FAU in Boca Raton, FL. They were great as usual! Before the concert began, I noticed the program listed, Holst; "Prelude and Scherzo, Hammersmith", Opus 52. I thought oh good, they're playing one of Holst's suites, but wondered why only one movement? Well, this piece is completely different and more contemporary. I liked it but some around us didn't care for it too much. Holst Hammersmith (extract) Frederick Fennell

I was surprised to see Phil Franke still there as I had heard that he retired (Ryan McGeorge was the other eupher). At intermission MGySgt Franke was at the front edge of the stage signing autographs for some students. I said hello and asked him about his retirement plans. He said he was retiring in April, 2012. I mentioned that I heard they hired a new eupher... Hiram Diaz. He said yes they did.

If you ever get the chance to hear "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band (or any other premier military band), you should go. It's always a real treat for me.

Heard them today at UNC Greensboro.

What to say: exquisite playing in all areas.

The brass gave a clinic in the high art of pianissimo playing. Extraordinary, near subsonics from the tubas at times.

The two euphs, Franke and McGeorge, played as one, perfect matching of timbre, timing and intonation.

Loved the use of cornets AND trumpets in many pieces, which bands have gotten away from. Really added to the tonal range.

    Woodwinds to die for.

    Percussion was better than superb.

World class is, well, just better than anything else.
