No, it's almost certainly not Mantia. I sure would like to know who it is, though!

I think this is Michael Colburn on the Golden Age of Brass Volume 3....(this is one of my favorite recordings and I have listen to it many times...)

    Here is the amazon link:

Golden Age of Brass, Michael Colburn, euphonium soloist

You can preview the excerpt to compare with the one used in the video. I think they sound pretty similar...

    pmeuph,

I think you're correct. I listened side by side and they sound the same. "The Golden Age of Brass" (3) is also one of my favorites.

I should have known! That is also one of my favorite albums, and I suspected it as one of the possibilities, but I couldn't find it last night. There are so many Endearing... recordings just in my own collection it's hard to keep them straight in my memory.

Here is the link from Amazon's Tuba-Euphonium Store:

Golden Age of Brass, Vol. 3

And you should notice that the conductor of the album is Henry Charles Smith, also a great euphonium player and wonderful musician.

Michael came down for lessons from VT during one summer, and he was impressive even during his college years. He could understand immediately any intricate concept I might try to show him, and then he could apply it to his own playing after a try or two. Plus he is very smart and has a keen sense of musical line. Good combination!

It's a shame we have lost him as a euphonium soloist, but he does a great job leading The U.S. Marine Band.

I LOVE this recording. Even after listening to it about a million times, I STILL get chills when he dives into that third variation. What a monster player.

My wife and I were driving out of the church parking lot after service this morning a few minutes after 12 noon. Imagine my delight when I turned on the radio to NPR's "From the Top" program and Chris O'Riley is announcing someone playing (missed the name as we tuned in late) Simone Mantia's "Believe Me if All Those Endearing Young Charms". I said to my wife, this has to be euphonium soloist! Grant Jameson, age 17 from Dublin, OH was the soloist. He did a wonderful job! (see links below). In the interview Grant explained the differences between baritone and euphonium. He said he's going to start studying next year in the UK at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I looked it up... Robert Childs, David Childs are on staff there as is also Christian Lindberg. Grant is a senior in HS and also plays in the brass band, Dublin Silver Band where his dad Tim Jameson is director.

What a beautiful sound -- and artistry beyond his age -- this man has! Played the Jacob beautifully. Perhaps the next great player? Glad the will have a chance to study with the world's best.
