I've seen Steven use that fingering, and I use it myself now and then, but only in certain contexts.

In theory, that partial is about 1/4 tone sharp. If everything were equal, you would also play a high Eb open (because it is a half step higher then D). But I know very few players who use open for high Eb - it seems that 1st valve almost always works. I think, for whatever twisted-tubing reason, the D is just not a cooperative note and requires extreme measures to fix it sometimes.
