    Euphonium Recital(s) - Doug Ruby

After 4 years of lessons and three recitals (May, 2009, Nov, 2010 and Feb, 2011), I have put recordings of the various soloes up on Acidplanet. These can be found here.

All of the recordings except the Vaughan-Williams "Six Studies in English Folk Songs" were recorded on my Besson Prestige 2051 at the Hollis Brookline High School band room with Dr. Sanae Kanda accompanist. The Vaughan Williams was recorded on my Sterling Virtuoso in an empty church. I still am not happy with Pantomime (it has kicked my b_tt in recital three times now!) but the recording I left here is probably the best of the three.

    In any case, please enjoy.

    Doug,

I just listened to most of your recordings you shared. Some of these are really tough pieces! Great job!

    Thanks for sharing.

Great job, Doug! It seems to me you have the heart of a euphonium player. You get a rich, liquid sound in those great lyrical phrases. I heard some nice little tidbits of phrasing that prove you are thinking of "the line." You really approach the melodies like you were singing them, which is what it's all about! Thanks for sharing.

Many thanks to all for the comments. I really enjoyed the most recent recital. I felt relaxed and was able to "get into it" and not feel as if I were being controlled by "nerves". It was a great feeling. Of course, as I listen to the recordings, I hear some things such as pitch issues, obvious cracked notes, running passages that may not be articulated as well as I would have liked. That is why we keep practicing. But I must admit that I consider it one of lifes great blessings that at age 60, I am able to focus my attention and time on something that I love as much as music.

    Again, many thanks.
