    TUSABTEC Finale - 2011

Leland (tubaist) uploaded a pretty good quality video of the finale from The U.S. Army Band's concert last night.

Melody Shop - Them Basses (TUSABTEC, 2011)

Interesting to see a rain-catcher and contra bass on stage. Not sure who is playing the oval euphs on the right side (don't recognize the uniform). On the left side next to Don Pamire are two euphers from Japan. Looks like Phil Franke is playing his Besson round stamp horn.

Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches

El Cumbanchero (Raphael Hernandez, arr. Naohiro Iwai)
The Cowboys (John Williams, arr. James Curnow)
    Festive Overture (Dmitri Shostakovich)

The two oval horn players are from the Tuba Quartet of Musikmesse 12 (German military). They are playing 4 valve rotary horns (3+1). They have two left hand paddles, one for the 4th valve and the other for the tuning slide kicker. Phil Franke's horn predates the round stamp and is in fact a 1974 Besson New Standard (medium shank). He got the horn when he was in high schoool and has been playing it ever since. And the two euphers from Japan are from the Central Band of the Japan Army (their premier band). Both quite good. The gentleman is playing a 642S and the young lady is playing an 842S.

The concert was spectacular. If you didn't have a chance to hear Matthew Van Emerick from Australia or Tim Buzbee of the Iceland Philharmonic Symphony, you missed soemtyhing. Both could play OVER the Army band at its fullest. To ssee one Euphonium or one F Tuba just fill up the hall was spectacular.

It was also great to meet all of the folks I have conversed with on Dave's web site.

        that's musikkorps rather than musikmesse.

They were two different design instruments. One was certainly 4 valves on the right hand plus a main tuning slide trigger for the left. The other did only have 3 valves on the right hand and a fourth plus the trigger on the left hand but I believe may have had a fifth valve (right thumb?) as well. Did anyone catch what marque the instruments were?

I spoke with them in the parking lot. They told me what the manufacturer was, but I did not know the name. It was not one we normally hear of here in the US (i.e. not Miraphone, Alexander or Meinl, etc.)

Kuhnl & Hoyer sound right. It would have been one of their 4 valve Royal-Line instruments with the tuning trigger.
