    Snorlax Joins the 5050 Club!!!

After a pleasant three-hour visit to the Woodwind and the Brasswind, I am the proud owner of a new Miraphone 5050.

Tried several others that shall remain nameless, but kept coming back to one of the two 5050s they had in stock. One of the 5050s just seemed to match me better, but that could be subjective. They were both excellent instruments.

Mine has the trigger. The instrument does not need it, but I do. ;-)

Actually, the thing is well in tune with itself and exhibits NONE of the traditional sharpness associated with Eb, E, and F above middle C.

In fact, its pitch is rather LOW compared to what I am accustomed to, so I will have to learn where all the notes are. The response is radically different than my old Willson.

The horn is better for me with the Demondrae mouthpiece; the Wick 4 didn't seem to resonate like the Warburton DT.

Ok, everyone...off I go with my 5050 and my iStroboSoft!!

Congrats! I've been impressed with the tone quality of the 5050's I've tried... very rich and dark. It sounds like you've found yourself a nice axe.

Congrats !! My son loves his 5050 and now that he's home for the rest of the summer I get to listen to him play it every day :-))

My son plays a Wick Heritage 4ABL.

I loved the way the horn played as a solo instrument but when I first heard it in a large ensemble my jaw dropped, it sounded absolutely amazing !!

    Congratulations Jim.

I'm envious as this is the horn I'd like to have.

My experience with the 5050 supports Jim's observation about the 6th partial sharpness -- it just ain't there. I am mostly playing a Yamaha 842 these days, which has a reputation for good intonation, but I am always surprised when I play the 5050 about how much those problem notes are centered and in tune. It does want to go flat for me in the staff and below, but that is easily bendable (I do not have a trigger). Mouthpieces are so personal, but for me the Alliance E2 beat all others on the 5050.

And it can be heard over any sized ensemble, should you wish.

My only negative is the stiffness of the springs, which aggravates a wrist/hand issue I have.

    John or Jim,

How is the concert 'G' near the top of the staff fingered 12? That's the only note I noticed Demondrae using his trigger. If it's sharp, does 3rd valve work better there?

    Thanks.

I'm finding it a few cents flat, but at this time I am finding EVERYTHING flat!
Gimme a week or so of practice room woodshedding before I attempt any answers!

Rick, 12 works fine for me on that G.

Later edit: But I tend to tune by ear, and quite idiosyncratically. If possible I prefer to check the A (concert pitch) against the ensemble (in ensembles which give an A) or by using a tuner, because the slot for the A is more narrow than that for the B flat. That establishes my basic starting tuning slide position. I have a small standard pull for the 1 and 4 slides. I never pull 2, and pull 3 very little. Then I adjust as needed as i play, as the horn warms, my chops warm, the group drifts, whatever....

    Thanks guys.

If I ever do get a 5050, I'd like to be able to get one without the trigger attachment.
