    Greetings. i'm a newbie here with a 321 question.

i just picked a 321 up off Ebay. the 321 is listed as having a .571" bore. this would lead me to believe that my large shank mouthpieces will fit. is this a correct assumption because the horn that i recieved has a small shank mp included and my large shanks won't fit. i'm a trombone player by trade and picked this up because i want to dabble a bit.

did i get some sort of mongrel or was this changed on this particular horn?

    thanks in advance, Tim

    Nope, you're fine. The 321 has a tenor-trombone-size receiver.

Some horns around the same bore come with a bass-trombone-size receiver. Also, the pro horns are usually around .592 and most come with bass trombone receivers. However, the Willson 2900 comes with a medium-size receiver that is not typically found in the trombone world.

The 321 is a favorite of trombone doublers. I have heard it used with the Chicago Symphony; and Dick Nash (Henry Mancini's solo trombonist) used a 321 for his euphonium work.

Dave, thank you so much for the quick reply. i guess i'll start looking for an old 6 1/2A that i used to used before i went to big mouthpieces.

    thanks again, Tim

If you are used to a large mouthpiece, Denis Wick makes a tenor shank model specifically for the 321 called the 4AY (Y for Yamaha, but it should be 4AS if it used their regular scheme). I have one and it does wonders for the Yamaha 201/321.

I have a virtually-unused Wick 5BS that I'd be willing to part with. It's a bit too small for me on the 321, but might work for you on yours...what piece do you use on trombone?

You could get a Yamaha YEP-621 leadpipe installed...
it seems to be the hotrodded upgrade for these horns.
