Thread: What model horn do I have?

  1. What model horn do I have?

I bought a Besson euphonium in 1976, which I have been playing ever since. I'm curious to know what model it is - I knew at one time, but I cannot remember it any more.

It is a satin silver finish with a polished silver inner bell. Bell diameter is 11 inches. It's a 4-valve compensating horn. It is marked as follows:

A scroll says "50 medals of honour."

Next is a B in old English script.

    Next is Besson.

    A five=point star

    London-Paris-New York

    Finally, "Made in England."

    The serial number is 566xxx.

Can anyone identify this horn for me?

    Thanks,

    Ben Sendrow

Your horn sounds like a Besson "New Standard". When I was in college, I had one of these, and I called it an "Imperial" though I am told the "Imperial" name is Boosey & Hawkes, not Besson. In either case, it is a wonderful horn.

I wonder, would that be the Besson 'round-stamp' I've heard so much about? That was about 30 years ago I think.

The attached image is of a round stamp, but not the brushed or satin finish.

Doug's information is correct, I believe. It should look like the horn in this photo:

The "round stamp" was labeled Boosey & Hawkes (not Besson) and would have been a Sovereign dating from just a bit later. These were the 1st generation large shank, large bell horns ca. 1980-ish.

Right, and here is a photo of that:

Thanks so much! Imperial is the name I could not remember. So that turns out to be wrong for a Besson anyway. I appreciate the help. Was Besson using model numbers at that time, or was it simply called the New Standard?

    Thanks again,

    Ben

Yep - that's it. Wow, that's amazing you came up with those so quickly.

    Thanks,

By the way--what is wrapped around the horn in the Coast Guard photo?

It's a leather wrap I made to protect the horn from scratches (metal buttons on the uniforms!). I cut it to shape, my wife sewed Velcro on the edge to make it easy to put on / take off, and I lined it with flannel to keep the leather's tanning chemicals away from the silver.
