    Young Euphonium Ensemble?

    Hello, I am a freshman in high school and I play euphonium. I made the wind symphony at my school, and I realize euphoniums are hardly ever recognized or known. What I'm getting at is...would high school students be too young to start a euphonium ensemble, maybe tubas too? There are a lot of talented euphonium players in my area and I think it would be fun. Maybe to play at some Nursing HOmes and stuff. I realize we would have to purchase music and stuff too without an adult "leader", but I think it would be fun. I don't know if this is a possiblity though...where would we play? How would we save up for music? I'm really interested in something like this. Thanks. And if this isn't a possiblity, maybe some other recommendations?

    Starting your own ensemble is very doable. Your band director will likely be able to give you basic instruction for arranging music. The easiest is to play 4 part vocal music. You would only need to transpose the treble clef parts.

    As far as performing, there are many places you could take advantage of. It's easier than you think. As you mentioned, nursing homes and other care facilities such as assisted living residences and dialysis centers are happy to have a group play. Some parks have summer concert series that they have to make quite an effort on to fill in all of the time slots. Malls, car lots, and other such larger businesses are welcoming around Christmas and Oktoberfest. Finally, churches can be quite inviting for musicians volunteering their time for services. You just have to keep your eyes open for opportunities.

      Good luck with this, if it comes off you will have the best times!

      Have a listen here;

      If there are any you like I will send them with compliments.

      They are mostly 3 x B flat TC and 1 x E flat tuba TC in manuscript, you may want to transpose them.

      There is also much on SibeliusMusic.com to play around with

      Best wishes, Chas

        Another option for music is composing your own. I don't know if you have Theory classes where you are, or if you know any young composers who just want a chance to hear their stuff played, but a euphonium quartet is a pretty easy group to write for. It would work a lot like 4 part vocal music.

          You'd probably find a fair quantity of (free, legal) "raw material" here: http://icking-music-archive.org/ByComposer.php

          For instance, here's a Beethoven fugue arranged for 2 trumpets and 2 trombones. Should work OK down the octave for 2 euphos and 2 tubas. http://icking-music-archive.or.../15fugues/Bee6Sco.pdf

          One particularly useful aspect of this site: many of the scores have the source files available too; in this instance they're Finale 2008 files. Makes the exercise of transposing that much quicker! http://icking-music-archive.or...Composer/Beethoven.php (scroll down)

          Anyhow, check it out!

          -------------------------

          (2) I've written a small handful of things that might be useful. Here's the link to one: http://www.tubaeuph.com/talk/f...did=1406&enterthread=y There are a few others in a similar vein - all freebies - and you're welcome to any of them.
