New Tuba Quartet, needs your suggestions

    Hi,

I am starting up a new Tuba Quartet (2 euphs, 2 tubas). We are all students and are of grade 8+ standard. But, because none of us have every done it before we really need some suggestions on repertoire. We are all definately up for a challenge and contemporary stuff is good as well.

I hope you can give me some suggestions.

    Thanks in advance

I have bought some good quartets from Paul Schmidt, who can be contacted via the serpent website. http://www.serpentwebsite.com/. And lots of good stuff from cimarron music, with very good prices, and prompt shipping. http://www.cimarronmusic.com/
I have a large collection of tuba euphonium quartets at home, and some time in the next week or so will try to find time to make a list of the good publishers for you.

I have arranged several quartets that might be a good fit. On the other hand I have done many that are better suited to a college-level group. Melody Shop, mentioned above, is a great choice for an advanced group because it is a march famous for featuring euphoniums.

    Anyway, check out this page:

    Euphonium-Tuba Quartets

It lists all my arrangements for quartet and has links to Cimarron Music and to Sheet Music Plus for each piece. I would especially recommend these for being good but fairly easy to play:

Trad.: Good Cheer Collection (very easy, Christmas)
Bach: Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring
    Dowland: Come Again, Sweet Love
Holst: March from Second Suite in F
    Reicha: Four Quartets
    Sousa: The Thunderer March
    Sousa: Washington Post March
Trad.: Songs from the British Isles

Cimarron's website also has a piece by Gordon Jacob written especially for a quartet I played in several years ago: Four Pieces for Tuba Quartet. I think it would be suitable for your group also.

Like I said, we are up for a challenge. But seriously, with out sounding to big headed we are all very capable musicians. Thanks for those suggestions, i will look into them.

OK, then stepping up a bit, these are intermediate to advanced in difficulty (but not ridiculous):

Bach: Bist Du Bei Mir (lovely song, 1st tuba is a bit high)
    Beethoven: Rule Britania
    Berlioz: Hungarian March
Gautier: Le Secret ("solo" feature for euph or tuba)
    Gervaise: Dance Suite
Greig: In the Hall of the Mountain King
    Joplin: Easy Winners
    King: Melody Shop
Mozart: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star (theme and variations, features everyone)
Schumann: Suite from Album for the Young

I have just listened to the recordings. I would say that melody shop is the kind of level of difficulty I am looking for.

Great! When you are digging into the hard stuff you can have a lot more fun!
