sounds almost similar to me. I was a cornet player and though the schools switched to baritone was was given a 3valved King.

Starting the 8th grade, we got a new director, Mr. Lunceford. He took me aside after band practice and said, "I think maybe you'd do a lot better with a bigger mouthpiece," and handed me an ugly old King 3-valve baritone (American euph). Within minutes I was sounding better than after 3 years on cornet, and I had found my musical home.
Soon after that, I started also playing tuba, then bass bone. I still play those too, but after over fifty years, I'm still really a euphonium player... It's still a treat every time I take the horn out of the case.
