    Buying Euphonium Mutes

My two favorite mutes are both made by Denis Wick. Their straight mute has a good tone and holds up well to loud playing. It does not affect the intonation too much at all and has a decent response. Their practice was a great help when I was on tour and had to practice in a hotel room at odd hours. It quiets the horn nicely and plays the whole range without trouble. I had tried a H/B practice mute, but it really messed up intonation and response in the high and low ranges.

    Buying Euphonium Mutes

Does anyone know where you can actually purchase Denis Wick euph mutes these days?

It seems WW & BW have been out of them for some time, and I'm having no luck finding them in stock anywhere else.

I have some recitals coming up in a few months, and I would like to play some solo lit. that has muted sections. That said, I really would like to have the DW euph mutes (both straight & practice), as I think the other euph mutes on the market fall short of the Wick models.

    Any ideas, euph fans?

    Thanks,

    KO

I have a R&S mute which I got from WW&BW. It works alright except for playing anything lower then a D below the bass clef which you're not going come across too often. I have to admit, I hardly even needed the mute. I use the mute occasionaly when if I'm playing along with a small hymn sing and for one spot for my own arrangement of Chester.

Many people think very highly of the Ron Apperson euphonium or tuba mutes. I don't like them quite as well as the Wick, but that might be my own personal quirk. Here is the site:

You can get a DW practice or straight mute from www.dillonmusic.com for $85. Shipping will be extra of course, but that will apply to ordering a mute from anywhere.

Would the Dennis Wick mute work fine for Strauss's: Don Quixote and Ein Heldenleben? If so I need purchase one.

I have a Peter Gane mute that I'm very satisfied with. It has a softer sound than the Dennis Wick when playing piano yet a nice snarl if I push into a forte or fortissimo. I think this mute is doing justice to the soft sound of the euphonium. But then again I would like to have a Wick mute just for the opportunity of a different sound.

The Gane mute is not forgiving so I have to centre the sound to get the payback. This is a nice feature when practicing because the mute will tell me when the sound is slightly unfocused giving a bad response. When the tones are in centre and I'm playing in the core of the sound it will always respond with a nice crisp sound given that I play louder than mf.

For my euphonium I use a Denis Wick mute, and also the Denis Wick Practice mute. The latter is extremely good for developing core in the sound. I encourage my students to use it regularly in their practice. I also use a Denis Wick baritone (in the UK sense) mute for my cimbasso, fits beautifully and is very useful for big band gigs! For my tubas I use both a Denis Wick and a Peter Gane Eb mute; having two is very handy, it saves recorking every time I want to change tuba, and the Eb mute fits my F tuba reasonably well. I don't think the Peter Gane mutes are available now, I bought mine many many years ago.

I can assure Euphyoungvituoso89 that the Wick mutes are excellent for both Don Q and Heldenleben, as I've played both several times ( on tuba, but my Wick euphonium mute was used by the euphonium player. I think having the same mutes aided with blend, particularly in the Don Q.

All Denis Wick products, mouthpieces, mutes, valve oil and sheet music can be bought from his website, and I believe that they are being imported into USA by a firm called Dansr, so there shouldn't be a problem with availability.
