    Brassed Off

This movie is all about a brass band in England, so naturally you see all kinds of brass instruments. Many are being played by musicians from the Grimethorpe band, who did the soundtrack for this movie.

The DVD and CD are great to watch and listen to (language on the DVD is pretty strong).

I just saw this on DVD and highly recommend it. It is a good and thoughtful story about a failing industry (the English coal mines) and the repercussions on the lives of the people affected. And of course, it has a special hook for us brass players - which is reason enough to see it! The Grimsley Brass Band scenes add a lightness to the film to balance things out.

Oh that was a great movie - despite the political overtones being conveyed. The soundtrack is wonderful, but maybe just a little too dynamic for listening to in the car (it's either very, very quiet, or REALLY, REALLY LOUD!!!).

My favorite line: "It's a BLOODY EUPHONIUM!!!" Cracks me up everytime.

That depends on if my wife is in the car with me. If she is, then it's always too loud

Grimethorpe did a great job on that sound track. I have a few of their CD's.

I need to watch that movie again. Some great music! Some may remember that Jim Carter, euphonium player and assistant Dir, played the butler on the TV series Downton Abby.

Thanks David to the link of Concierto d’Aranjuez. Really nice piece!

Coincidentally, I just returned Brassed Off Blu-Ray to the library last week, checked-out as a fun re-watch if we found ourselves at loose ends during the MLK weekend. Insufficient interest from the family, but we did watch the Concierto d'Orange Juice scene.
I tried buying a wind band arrangement for my daughter, but couldn't find it. Per Google, a refusal of Rodrigo's family to allow it (legally, anyway - there's apparently a bunch of bootleg arrangements out there).

Another family favorite band movie is "Swing Girls". (The DVD is sub-titled, and there's youtube versions with the subtitles, too).
We enjoy the oh-so-Japanese antics, and take inspiration from the actors having performed the music themselves. They apparently didn't play until being cast for the movie, then studied intensively to come to speed. After the movie was released, they went on tour to prove that they could actually play.

Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band recently share their whole CD called, "Movie Brass" on YouTube. Maybe it's no longer in print is why they did that. Some great tracks on that CD.
