Hello all,
I am no longer playing the English baritone in a brass band and so am selling my 3 valve Sterling baritone. This is a Sterling Virtuoso with a heavy bell, perfect for euphonium players...
Depending on the chord, the Ab may want to be shaded lower in pitch while the G# may be a leading tone into the next phrase and shaded just a bit sharper?
Nice piece. Try 3rd valve for the lower D and 1-2 for the upper. Changing valves might make the slur easier. 3rd valve might help with intonation on the lower D.
I like the counter melody with...
Brian,
If you feel a need to sell your DC4, send me a PM...Doug
This certainly is the best place (worldwide) to come and discuss euphonium. I belong to several other forums that specialize in watches (collecting, watchmaking, vintage and modern), cars (hot rods,...
Bach does not make medium shank mouthpieces. You would indeed have to use a small shan k with a small to medium (euro) shank adapter.
Medium shank is the correct size. I indicated in my response that I had to use an adapter (supplied originally with the horn) to use the 6 1/2AL and other small shank mouthpieces. Therefore, the 4AM...
Of course this is based on my experience, but I first played "your horn" in spring of 1969 as a senior in high school and then again from Fall of 1971 to Spring of 1974 at UC Berkeley. Both of these...
John, Happy Birthday. I hope you have many more miles on your MC and notes on your collection of beautiful horns!
The 4AM is the correct mouthpiece for the medium shank Besson 181 (New Standard/Imperial). The Besson 10 mouthpiece is really a miserable excuse for a mouthpiece shaped object. Back in the day, I...
The 3 valve compensating Besson/Boosey&Hawkes euphonium was often used as an intermediate instrument purchased by high schools here in the US during the late 1950s and 1960s as an alternative to the...
John,
That horn is absolutely stunning. I am so pleased for you that you got this work done. I am hoping to get to Europe this summer for the IBBSS and then make a trip to drop off my Adams with...
Steve Vaughn,
The trigger assembly looks a LOT like the older mechanism on my Sterling Virtuoso. Similar screw based tuning (which incidentally makes pulling the tuning slide out problematic).

To all,
I am NOT a fan of most 4 valve baritones. In the brass band context, you just won't use the 4th valve for range and using it for intonation or alternate fingerings is of marginal value...

Hi all,
I started instrumental music midway through the 4th grade in January 1960 on baritone horn at age 9. I think I was playing a 3 valve Bundy bell front at the time. I also played Reynolds...
My early 2007 German built 2051 also had that gap. The change to the newer wrap didn't occur until 2011 or so (I think).

Hiram,
You sound unbelievable! Wonderful.

Definitely not an HBS 479. This is functionally equivalent to Yamaha YEP-621 (non comp 3+1 valve).
Charley's wife plays baritone. Charley has converted his passion for vintage euphoniums into a business, servicing and restoring all kinds of horns. He is talented and patient. I have spent quite a...
David,
I remember driving down to New London/Groton to take lessons from you just about during this time. At that time I had a 5 yr old daughter and 2 yr old son. They are now 41 and 38! It is a...
Same here. The 1st and 2nd valve compensating loops will dump their water BACK into the 4th valve loop when using 1-4 and 2-4 combinations. The third valve comp slide may accumulate a little bit of...
I agree with Dave. These horns (which I played as well) shipped with a medium-to-small shank adapter and an absolutely horrid Besson 10 medium shank mouthpiece. I used the adapter and my Bach 6 1/2...
Pictures!!
stunning. if you want a 3 valve comp horn, I have seen none nicer.
