I was invited to play a solo with the Burlington Concert Band (Vermont) for yesterday's concert and chose "The Volunteer" by Walter Rogers with Harold Brasch's concert band parts. We only had one...
Well, I used to play for the Air Force, Tim for the Navy, and Yutaka has his DMA from the University of Texas and teaches at UVM. Mike Paul did his bachelors and masters at Illinois State and taught...
We finally got around to recording another concert. Unfortunately, due to a miscue with the video camera we didn't get the first two pieces on the program.

Thanks, Dave. We try. :)
Hi. I'm a little late posting this, but here's a link to a YouTube playlist of our most recent concert on December 11, 2015:

Sorry about the delay in posting the remaining two videos. Here's a link to the entire Metalwerx concert playlist:

I will concur with the previous opinions about sounding more like a vocalist. When I'm playing, the sound in my head isn't a euphonium, it's Luciano Pavarotti. :)
I've heard that sound is 10%...
One more for today: "Grand Slam," by Lennie Niehaus. As far as we can tell this is an original work for tuba/euph quartet, as we didn't find any other references to the piece for any other ensemble....
Our "relax and reset" piece after "Irrational Happiness" was "They Didn't Believe Me," composed by Jerome Kern for the 1912 musical "The Girl From Utah" (yeah, we'd never heard of it before, either)...
The world premier of "Irrational Happiness," by Lydia Lowery Busler, was the centerpiece of our concert last Sunday and is a wonderful new addition to the tuba/euphonium quartet repertoire. We had...
I used Blue Juice for many years, but as my Willson 2900S went past 22 years old I found the valves were showing some wear and drying out more often than I liked. I've switched to the Hetman Classic...
Dave: Thanks for listening! We also did your arrangement of the march from the Holst Second Suite in F. I haven't gotten around to processing that section of the video yet,, but I will get it...
One more recording for today: the "Pop Suite" by Arthur Frackenpohl, who was one of my professors when I was doing my undergrad work at the Crane School of Music (SUNY Potsdam) in the late '70s. I...
Here's a second recording from our concert: a medley of music from the Hayao Miyazaki animated movie, "Princess Mononoke." It is a lovely arrangement from a book of duets, trios and this quartet...
Last Sunday (2/15/2015) our tuba/euph quartet, Metalwerx, put on a concert at the University of Vermont. I'll post more later, once I get the video processed, but here's a first cut, our closer:...
Thanks, all. :)
Dave: I do play fairly regularly, though it's mostly with students and during the school year with Winds (which is sponsored by UVM). A large part of the effort for Vintage was...
Greetings. I don't solo much these days, but I did attempt to beat myself back into some semblance of playing shape to perform David Gillingham's "Vintage" with the Vermont Winds last month at the...
I own an Imperial made in the early '70s. The valves should be nickel-plated brass, so given the age the wear on valves 1 through 3 doesn't look too bad. As long a you keep them well-lubricated...
Just found a $45 version at Sheet Music Plus, but it's still the full brass ensemble version. Is there not a version with just piano?
With a 3+1 euph you don't have much choice but wrap your left arm around to the 4th valve and anchor the bottom bow somewhere on your body. What I do is balance the euph by holding the horn...
Dave,
I have a student who's interested in trying the duet version of this piece for her senior recital, but we can't find anything other than the $70 brass ensemble arrangement. Is there a duet...
It might be simpler and much less expensive to buy a good piece of leather that's finished on one side and "fuzzy" on the other, cut it to fit your bell flare, and then use lacing or velcro to secure...
I have a beginner student who plays on a nickel-plated Schiller 400. It was a less-expensive starter option for the family ($537 + shipping) than renting to buy a 3-valve Jupiter or Yamaha 201.

Dave: I've read through your buying guide before, it's very useful stuff. I may only buy a new instrument every 15 years or so, but I do recommend it to students who want to buy their first...
