The 2280 is probably a better choice for modern use. The 24i/25i (which I grew up on) are traditional front facing American baritones, smaller bore than the 2280 and not nearly as resonant as the...

I find a substantial difference on the DE between the 103 and 104, particularly if I get the "S" rim. (ex. 104S) I find the 103 works pretty well for me with the EUPH J cup and J9S shank. The M&B is...
My chops have stayed right around 26mm for the last 40 years. I have found that going any larger than a Wick 4 (any version) just doesn't work. And depending on the horn, a Bach 5G is my preference...
There are important differences between the floating leadpipe on the standard Prestige, new gold lacquer Prestige, current Sovereign, Adams, and Sterling Virtuoso. The Sovereign's leadpipe wraps...
The Wick 4AY is essentially a tenor shank Wick 4AL. It was specifically designed for the the 321. I find I can get a VERY nice full tone on a YEP-321 using the 4AY.
Doug
Joe,
I hesitate to offer too much advice. I don't want you to end up purchasing a gaggle of mouthpieces! Both Dave and I are fans of the 4AL, having a cumulative 60+ years on that mouthpiece,...
I have a recording of the New England Brass Band playing a SA hymn. I converted it into a ring tone that I used for any calls from members of the NEBB.
Joe,
Be aware that the 4AL will not fit your Conn. Your Conn is a tenor shank and the 4AL is bass trombone shank.
Doug
Joe,
The mouthpiece that will work well on the Conn is VERY different than what works on the ACB. I used a 6.5AL on my Conn for years (back in the late 60s and early 70s). I continued to use the...
Ok Micah,
Now you are definitely in Charley Brighton's backyard when it comes to historical instruments.I am certain that when you say "Edwardian" instruments, you are talking about British...
Micah,
I have one of the carbon fiber belly plates that Geneva used to use. These are great. The basic mounting points on the Besson are quite strong, including the Gold plated brass rod and the...
PM'd about the I9s.
Note: Thread ttitle changed at request of original poster (David Shinn)
Rick,
I originally ordered a whole brass band set of Moistureguard covers from the UK. The euphonium covers were plenty big enough for my 11.8" (300mm) Sterling and my 12" Adams and would have fit...
Please note that the Alliance number system and Wick numbering system do not coincide. At 26 mm, the Wick 4 (4AL, SM4, SM4U, Sm4X, SM4UX) is equivalent to the Alliance 3 (DC3, E3).

While I have used Wrights Silver Cream to polish off the plaque build-up on valves, I always wash the valve throughly with soap and water afterwards. If in doubt, don't use it!
Doug
Dave, at one point in the very recent past I had six Wick 4ALs. They fell into three categories of "feel". I have kept two of the six that are pretty close to each other.
1. My original Wick 40...
Dave,
I had a DC3 for quite some time. To me, the rim actually felt just a bit smaller than the 4AL. After trying for some time, I came back to the 4AL.
Doug
David,
I am just a bit ambivalent here. Of course you sound wonderful on both mouthpieces and I enjoyed listening. The differences I heard were consistent across all of the snippets:
1. Red has...
The newest Virtuosos play quite similarly to the vintage Dave Werden speaks of. The linkage and action on the tuning slide trigger is better. I cannot speak to the valves, but I do know that Paul...
The Boosey&Hawkes "Globe Stamp" as pictured above dates a horn from roughly early 1970s to early 1980s.
This little hot rod (actually just a sports car) has had 2 x Euphonium, 1 x 3/4 CC Tuba, my roll-on suitcase, and my CPAP case on a 900 mile ride to the USABTEC in DC and return through NYC to...

I always liked the medium shank Besson/Boosey&Hawkes Imperials. Their intonation was better than the Sovereign. Once Besson quit making this horn, it created a market for the Willson 2900, first in...
A. looks great
B. Reputable seller
C. S/N makes this a 1970. Excellent vintage. Desirable medium shank
D. Unknown valve condition
