    Good Travel Case

    Pretty soon I will be going on a trip and I would like to know the best kind of case to use for traveling. Not too bulky, but I do want something to keep my instrument super safe. Thanks!

    I suggest the Marcus Bonna case. Adams uses that case for their horns, which is how I came to experience it. The case is quite light for a hard case, but has excellent protection:

    It comes with backpack straps, so you can carry like a gig bag when you are laden with lots of other stuff.

      This might be too bulky...but it is very protective, and you probably won't find something as good at this price:

      Besson currently sells its equivalent for something like $600 dollars, which makes no sense.

        On the contrary, from a business standpoint, Besson's pricing makes PERFECT sense.

          Also, the Hiscox case is light and very strong. I find it a bit awkward to carry, but it protects quite well:

            Thanks for all the suggestions! I think i may go with the York because it is quite reasonably priced, and I like the style.

              Yamaha seems to do the same...they and Besson make their cases prohibitively expensive to buy new. does anyone really buy them?

                No, and that's precisely the point.

                  Surely they could make a profit on them selling them. Do they really justify costing nearly the same as the Marcus Bonna in cloth?

                    You may want to confirm that your euph will fit the York case before you order it, as the foam inserts of most form-fitting cases, like those of York, Besson, Willson, and Yamaha, are specifically cut to match the manufacturer's horn, and differences in things like bell flare, leadpipe placement, 4th valve placement, bottom bow radius, tuning slide stand-off, and overall length of the horn, may make it difficult, if not impossible, to fit the horn into the case or close the case without damaging the horn.

                      A) They're not in the business, and clearly have no desire to be in the business, of selling cases; they're in the business of selling horns;

                      B) clearly, they have run the calculations and come to the conclusion that the minuscule profit to be made from selling cases isn't worth the explicit, implicit, and non-monetary opportunity costs of doing so;

                      C) At $600 each, they clearly DO make a profit on the few cases they do sell to the suckers who are willing to pay it.

                        Euph,

                        What horn are you planning on putting into the case? Not all cases fit all euphoniums.

                          My son plays a Miraphone 5050 and has a Marcus Bona case. He just traveled to 4 grad school auditions on 16 different planes. He was able to carry on the horn on every flight without a problem. No damage at all to the horn. I'm not sure I would ever want to have to have it checked but I think the size and shape of the case really helped him not get stopped or questioned.
