4th-Valve Locks

Rate this Entry
Some euphoniums that have the 3+1 setup also have a clasp of some kind that secures the 4th valve in its down position. This helps to protect it from damage while the horn is in its case. Some brands have a hinged metal flap that swings around to sit on top of the 4th valve button, and others have an L-shaped rod that can be adjusted to hold the valve down.

I have noticed that some players tend to lock the valve down very tightly. This can happen when the hinged metal flat gets bent down a little or when the L-shaped rod is pulled down too tightly. Fastening the valve down tightly doesn't provide any significant extra protection and it tends to compress the felt washers under the valve cap. If this washer gets too flat it will make a clunking sound when you push down the 4th valve

For the flap type lock, bend as necessary to make sure the valve is not locked too tightly. And for the L-shaped bar make sure not to pull down too hard when securing the valve.
